Overview[]
Shirtwood Forest, as it is known by local residents, is a small section of swampy woodland located on Finchley Drive in the township of Brick Township, New Jersey, a township through which Route 70 runs. Though not world famous, this small patch of swamp has become a local curiosity for the citizens of Brick for its surreal nature and ambiguous origins.
Named after Sherwood Forest, a location associated with the European legends of Robin Hood, Shirtwood Forest is simply a small patch of the treeline, just a few yards off of Finchley Drive, that is absolutely littered with white T-shirts.[1] While the shirts have obviously been placed there by humans, the identities of said individuals are unknown.
Most of the shirts are nailed to or otherwise suspended from the various trees protruding from the swamp water. Some residents claim that the number of shirts varies over time as though those responsible are routinely adding and subtracting shirts. Others have claimed to hear the shirts make strange noises when hit with rocks, often described as sounding like the shirts are sprayed with large amounts of starch. Many residents have reported feelings of unease or paranoia when observing the shirts.[2]
